Rostering As You Like It by Inzenius
Some rosterers like to use the different grid and collumn options for their rostering with in addition to start and finish time, added breaks and view by Department, Cost Centre, Position, Events or Employees, with shifts tagged with Task, Units-of-Production or Service, Allowances, Deductions and Asset allocation or even modified Pay Rates for the one, or any number of shifts they work each day.
Let’s have a look at some of the rostering User Interface options.

Rostering Option / Feature
Multi-grid simple rostering format
A more basic roster grid view, suited for less complexity.
Excel-style detailed roster grid
This provides a more detailed view that allows you to break down shifts by components (tags, cost, etc.). Useful for more granular costing.
Demand-built rostering
Automatically builds rosters based on demand (e.g. number/type of events or service units). You select the start & end times and units to produce, and the system populates what’s needed. Suitable for event-based or service businesses.
Skillset rostering
Create shifts based solely on the required “grade” or skill set, without initially assigning specific employees. Helps with budgeting and planning before you decide who works.
Roster copy/template reuse
You can reuse or copy and paste rosters and recurring rosters.
View/display preferences
Customisable roster grid: show/hide columns (e.g. costs, breaks), toggle whether to display planned / timekeeping / authorised engagements—also, preferences per user (time format, how warnings/errors are shown, etc.).
Engagement types/stages (Planned, Timekeeping, Authorised)
Roster items flow through states: for example, you plan shifts, then track when people clock in or the actual time is captured, and then authorise for payment. Allows comparison of planned vs actual.
Roster acceptance tracking/employee portal
Employees can accept or reject shift offers, see changes, and receive notifications. Great for operations where staff agree on shifts rather than being assigned.
Costing & forecast reporting during rostering
While building the roster, you can see cost estimates (based on hour rates, on-costs, etc.), compare them to the budget, and forecast labour spend. Helps optimise before publishing the roster.
